Koko the Gorilla Mourns Robin Williams Death

Robin Williams met Koko in 2001 at The Gorilla Foundation in Woodside, California. The encounter was a memorable time for both of them. Koko even recognized Robin from watching his movies on video. Koko is fluent in American sign language and soon had them laughing, playing and tickling each other. Koko hugging and kissing. They were two old souls meeting again and they both treasured the encounter.
But now, Koko the Gorilla mourns Robin Williams death. Sadly, Robin Williams, passed away August 11, 2014. Koko was with Dr. Penny Patterson, her foster mother and president of the Gorilla Foundation, when Dr. Patterson got a phone call with the news. A spokesperson for the Gorilla Foundation said:
After the first call, Koko came to Dr. Patterson with an inquiring look on her face. Dr. Patterson explained that “we have lost a dear friend, Robin Williams.”
Koko was quiet and looked very thoughtful.
Koko could be found sitting quietly, head bend, and with her lower lip trembling.

Dr. Patterson said of Robin’s visit:
“Robin made Koko smile — something she hadn’t done for over six months, ever since her childhood gorilla companion, Michael, passed away.”

That is just astounding and wonderful. So many of us will miss Robin Williams and to know that even beyond humans he’ll be missed is really a warm feeling. RIP Robin Williams

Such a sad loss. I feel it deeply too. 🙁 Poor Koko.
My heart is broken. The news of Robin’s death hit me very hard. Much harder than I ever expected. I know it is because of my family history with depression and other mental health disorders.
I feel so bad for Koko.
I love the video. Robin Williams inspired us all. What a tragedy. Thank you for this touching tribute.
I’m sure he understood. Gorillas know more and aren’t given the respect they should when it comes to intelligence.
What a sad, sad loss, and it doesn’t surprise me that Koko would feel sadness over it, too.
