A Short List of Top Hypoallergenic Dogs
Having allergies can put a huge damper on your life, especially when you are an animal lover. It is hard to live without pets when you hold them very close to your heart. Luckily for you, here is a detailed list of top hypoallergenic dogs to use this when you are out looking for a furry friend to add to your family.
Bichon Frise puppies
Bichon Frise puppies are a great idea for people who have allergies. You would think that something this cute and furry would have to be bad for you, but they are one of your best bets if you have allergies. They do not shed and their coats do not collect dander. As long as you brush them regularly, there should be no problems.
Schnauzers
Schnauzers are very family-oriented and smart dogs. They do not create serious problems for people that have allergies. Schnauzers are great for people that want a special “buddy” since schnauzers are territorial and don’t like to let loved ones out of their sight.
Yorkshire Terriers
Yorkshire terriers do not have a lot of dander and they do not shed, making them ideal pets for someone with allergies. Yorkshire Terriers are fairly small, so they won’t require a lot of space. The downside is the fact that these pups require a lot of grooming.

Shih Tzu
Most people look at the long locks on a Shih Tzu and assume it will wreak havoc on their allergies. This is not true. In fact, these dogs do not shed very much at all. They need a great deal of grooming, but that should be worth it to have a dog that is affectionate, loyal and cuddly. You may want to think twice about this breed if you have babies or very young children since this dog tends to be very jealous.
Greyhound
You cannot write a list of top hypoallergenic dogs without mentioning the greyhound. The coat on this dog is so short and thin that it barely sheds. It is very easy to keep the Greyhound dog clean because the hair is not very long. If you are in a cooler climate, you will have to keep them indoors since they do not adapt well to the cold.
The Basenji
The Basenji is a great dog for several different reasons. The first is the fact that it does not shed a lot. Many people like this dog because it does not bark, so there is no need to worry about it bothering the neighbors. Basenjis also do not have a lot of dander. On the flip side, it can be pretty difficult to train this breed because they are quite stubborn.
Conclusion
As you can tell from the article above, having allergies does not automatically mean you cannot have a dog. Any of these breeds are great for people that have to deal with pet allergies. While there are several more breeds that fit the bill, I decided to only mention the most popular on this list of top hypoallergenic dogs.

My hubby is allergic to dogs (and we have 4). Since our pack is a bunch of random rescue mutts, we take other precautions like no dogs on the bed or in our bedroom, and we looked for a house with all hardwoods downstairs to make cleaning easier. If you want a dog bad enough, there are thing you can do. Hypoallergenic dogs is a great option!
Hello!
I had 3 boys that were allergic to almost everything growing up. They are still very allergic to cats. We owned a schnauzer at one point, and they truly were not allergic to her. She got to sleep in their beds, and that made them all happy! Fortunately, I am not allergic to any of them! 🙂
I’m not allergic to animals at all, thankfully. I’d be sad if I was. I’m glad your boys had a chance to love a schnauzer. That’s pretty cool. Thank you so much for stopping by, Rene. Take care!
I’ve always heard these lists are somewhat controversial for a number of reasons. This list is great because it lists the common breeds between all the lists instead of purporting to include them all. I remember when I dogsat for a living that there are some experts who insist hypoallergenic dogs don’t really exist. Maybe that’s why there’s no general agreement on what constitutes a hypoallergenic breed.
Well, we can’t please all of the people all of the time, can we? Maybe “hypoallergenic dogs” only really means “those that make you sneeze less.” lol I’m so glad you stop by for a visit now and then. But tell me what to call you, okay? 🙂 Peace
Kat or Katherine 🙂 My comment was meant as a compliment … not a criticism – I should’ve worded it better!
Oh, I knew that, Kat. I was being tongue-in-cheek, so I suppose “I” should have worded it better. 🙂 No problems here. Peace
