Garbage versus Nature – What are we doing?
A Short Documentary about Life and Death
Garbage versus nature
People should know about this terrible thing we do.
Most of us are simply unaware.
Until my ghastly tale is told,
this heart within me burns.Samuel Taylor Coleridge – The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
This short film, MIDWAY, is a Message from the Gyre. It is a powerful visual journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk through the fire of horror and grief, facing the immensity of this tragedy—and our own complicity—head on. And in this process, we find an unexpected route to a transformational experience of beauty, acceptance, and understanding.

Garbage versus Nature
The island in this video is Midway Island in the North Pacific Ocean. It is more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continent.
Do we have the courage to face the realities of our time and allow ourselves
to feel deeply enough that it transforms us and our future?
Come with me on a journey through the eye of beauty
across an ocean of grief and beyond.
About the Albatross:
The wingspans of Wandering albatrosses can reach up to 3.5 metres (11 ft). This is the largest wingspan of any bird.
An albatross can live up to 60 years and in that life time it would have travelled millions of kilometres.
They attain sexual maturity at around 5 years but usually breed when they are 7 – 10 years old.

Hi Jeanne Melanson
Lovely bird and vedio too.Just loved it.
thanks.
What a sad legacy for this island. I noticed some remnants of the war in this video that brought so much death to American troops. Now humans are killing these beautiful birds with plastic which never dissolves. There’s too much ignorance in this world.
60 years?!? wow! their life is really long.
This is sooo sad :'(! Florida isn’t the best about recycling. I’m going to start doing the best I can myself after seeing this!
I have seen this video before and it always makes me cry. It should be a wake up call to everyone as to what to we are doing to our planet.
oh no.. that’s terrible.. i was so behaved and shocked watching the video.. So sad about them that many are died. I was also amazed by the Albatross of what they capable of and what they are. I’ve learned a lot, I love your posts. 🙂
The video is so sad. We are rational beings and with that gift, we must use it to take care of this world we live in. I am worried that the future generations will no longer have a clean place to live in, and that animals and plants would go extinct. Thank you for sharing. This indeed is a wake up call.
Gosh, I had no idea that an Albatross had such a long life span. As they say; you learn something new every day!
Awe. I remember a friend showed this to me awhile ago. It was so sad when I watched it. I hate seeing birds getting hurt. Nonetheless, thank you for the awareness!
